Sheepshead Bay
Runs from Ocean Parkway on the west, to Nostrand Avenue, Gerritsen Avenue, Knapp Street and Shell Bank Avenue on the east, Avenue X to the north and the Shore Belt Parkway on the south.
Salt-air, seafood and seagulls greet those house hunters looking for waterfront living when they arrive in Sheepshead Bay. With a range of housing options in Sheepshead Bay including single family homes, low-rise apartment buildings, and mid-century brick row houses, the Sheepshead Bay neighborhood also contains converted beach bungalow colonies, creating some tiny alleyways barely wide enough for two. Townhouse duplexes complete with driveways, two-story, two-family attached and semi-attached homes, and co-ops also define Sheepshead Bay. Most recently, new luxury condos are dotting the waterfront including the Breakers, a waterfront gated community with private boardwalk, pool, parking, and gym.
Complete with a Sheepshead Bay Yacht Club and bait-and-tackle shop, the neighborhood feels more fishing village than city. (The roughly two-and-a-half square mile neighborhood is named after the fish once found in the Bay’s waters, and recreational fishing takes place year round).
Once the playground of the likes of Lillie Langtree and Diamond Jim Brady, Sheepshead Bay offered horse and then auto races. Today, numerous sidewalk cafés and restaurants line the waterfront avenue and are filled with people on warm summer nights, many who travel over the water after a concert or ballgame in nearby Coney Island.
Sheepshead Bay is approximately a fifty-minute ride on the MTA from Times Square. A mixed-use development (with national retailers) is planned directly across from Exit 8 of the Belt Parkway, and adjacent to the elevated subway station served by the B and Q trains.
