Live Who You Are
Greenwood
Runs from Prospect Avenue to the north, 20th Street and MacDonald Avenue to the east, 38th Street to the south and Greenwood Cemetery to the west.
Greenwood, which is just south of Park Slope, sits on the highest elevated point in Brooklyn, so the views are spectacular in Greenwood whether you’re in a wood-frame house or a high-rise apartment building. The neighborhood was rezoned just a couple of years ago, so joining many of Greenwood’s existing single-family and two-family homes are new luxury condos. As Greenwood spiffs up, there has also been a recent movement to renovate and restore some of Greenwood’s historical wood-frame houses to their turn-of-the-century beauty.
That’s turn-of-the-19th-Century, that is. Greenwood’s history actually goes back much further than that, because the area was a battleground in 1776 as part of the wide-ranging Battle of Long Island (also known as the “Battle of Brooklyn”), the first major battle in the Revolutionary War after the Declaration of Independence was signed.
The neighborhood of Greenwood takes its name from the historic 478-acre Green-Wood Cemetery (it’s a national historic landmark, and both F.A.O. Schwarz and Boss Tweed are buried there), but the area itself is alive and kicking. There’s a lot of activity on the tree-lined streets of Greenwood, and also on the stoops of the attached two- and three-story brick, frame or clapboard row houses.
For shopping and dining, Greenwood residents enjoy easy access to Park Slope’s quite charming (and ever-expanding) collection of cafés, bars and stores.
