Ditmas Park
Runs from Beverly Road to the north, Foster Avenue to the south, Ocean Avenue to the east and Coney Island Avenue to the west.
Ditmas Park has one of the largest collections of Victorian houses in the nation, and many of them are large, with multiple bedrooms, porches, and garages, and full of stunning details. That’s because these Ditmas Park homes were originally built for the likes of the Guggenheims, and film stars like Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks.
This landmarked district, however, also contains other styles of houses: Colonial Revival houses, Tudors, and even Swiss Chalets line the wide, tree-lined streets of Ditmas Park, which often have English-sounding names like Marlborough and Stratford. (The Ditmas Park neighborhood is actually named for the Van Ditmarsen family, who were 17th-Century sheep farmers.) Co-ops are available, some with eat-in kitchens and shared garden access. Adding to the country feel of the Ditmas Park neighborhood are apple, peach, cherry and pear trees.
But Ditmas Park — which New York magazine called “the New San Francisco” — is definitely not the suburbs. There are great restaurants, notably The Farm on Adderley, which serves delicious American Nouveau cuisine. Cortelyou Road is the major shopping street, with a greenmarket that’s held every Sunday, and Newkirk Plaza, an open-air mall of 30 retailers which offers everything from doughnuts to medical supplies for sale, recently underwent a million-dollar facelift. For books and bohemia, hit Vox Pop, a bookstore/performance space/community gathering place which offers an open mic every Sunday night.
